Using a single story A on a font

Do you hate double story 'a's and want to use a single story 'ɑ' in your designs and text?

Don't want to pay £££ for a brand new font that has the 'a' you want?

This guide is for you.

OPEN OFFICE:
Go to Insert -> Special Character and scroll down to IPA Extensions.

Choose the single story 'a' (or U+0251) and press OK.

There you hɑve it! It works with Ariɑl, Courier New, Tɑhomɑ ɑnd Times New Romɑn, just to nɑme ɑ few.

ON THE INTERNET:

Copy and paste this letter: ɑ

Alternatively, you can use an ALT code to display the character.

Enjoy!

WARNING: This is only stylistic and does not work as a normal 'a'. 'ɑ' is a special character and is not alphanumeric.

Not all fonts have this special character! Most sans-serif fonts look okay when the 'ɑ' is set to Arial or Tahoma, however. The same goes for serif fonts with the 'ɑ' in Times New Roman.

Interesting point. Some opentype fonts come with options for single story a's and g's that can be found in the opentype or glyphs palette too. This is pretty rare though, and most likely not available on fonts that come pre-installed on your computer.
